While I don’t necessarily agree with the line-by-line analysis, the importance of the song is well-documented. Given everything the nation has been through in the past week, it is obvious that there are still too many of us not represented by stars and stripes. Too many are marginalized. Too many are shoved to the side.
There are some who think they can impose a new Revolutionary War upon us without spilling any blood. Yet, for anyone who supports this recent round of SCOTUS decisions, there is already blood on your hands. If you support the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025, you already have blood on your hands. If you support the laws denying trans children help, you already have blood on your hands. If you have supported anti-LGBTQAI+ legislation at the state level, you already have blood on your hands. If you have ever so sneered at someone you think might be gay, you already have blood on your hands. If you support conversion therapy, you already have blood on your hands.
I don’t want to stand next to someone singing about the “dawn’s early light” when all they see is a nation dominated by white pseudo-Christians. I don’t want to stand next to someone singing about “the rockets red glare” when they’d happily aim that rocket at a person of color. I don’t want to stand next to someone singing about “the land of the free” when that land was stolen from my people and developed by people of color who were considered nothing but cheap property.
What has become painfully obvious over the course of the past week is that there is no one in Washington, D. C. to protect us. We have to protect ourselves. We have to band together, you and I, and we have to stand up and make our voices heard, “Till earth and heaven ring.” We have to fight back against tyranny. We have to fight back against racism. We have to fight back against homophobia. We have to fight back against transphobia. We have to fight back against a brand of so-called Christianity that is so evil the very devil himself stands at the forefront in all his orange glory waving their flag.
Lift EVERY voice and sing.
Lift Every VOICE and sing.
Lift Every Voice to the top of every mountain, people, and SING!
