When I tell people I think that Turkey is one of the great up-and-coming fashion capitals, they often look at me with a rather quizzical expression. Turkey isn’t exactly known for setting the fashion world on fire, or even kindling that particular type of flame. I have a feeling that perception may be about to change, though, and if it does a lot of the credit may go to one man: Bora Aksu.
While basing his operations out of London, the Turkish-born Aksu is forcing the fashion world to look East, to that ancient land where the two influences meet and merge. What he shows us, time and again, is nothing short of astonishing and he has quickly earned a place on my “must watch” list every season. My only point of concern is that he has yet to develop any kind of a US stocklist, which is quite a disappointment.
What was really impressive from Aksu’s spring collection, though, was a full-length blue veil and it is that look that dominates the second half of our images. Amanda brought a lot of emotion to bear under the veil and shows just how dramatically a simple drape can effect an entire look.
This was Amanda’s first shoot with us and we appreciate her patience as we constructed the garment over her. As always, our thanks to Kat for the makeup and hair assistance as well.
I’m entertained by the whole cloth-draping, folding, and pleating thing we’ve seen in several fashion lines for both spring and summer, so we are likely to experiment even more with looks such as this. We can only hope they come out looking as good!
