Yes, this is a departure from our norm, but since it’s Memorial Day weekend and there’s this race going on literally right outside my door I assume no one is going to mind.
I’ve not done anything in the way of live music photography in several years. While I typically enjoy the challenge, I was left stranded and unpaid a couple of times too many and the number of well-lit venues declined to zero. Chasing after pictures that were inevitably grainy and unusable doesn’t have much thrill.
When I saw that Metazoa Brewing Company was hosting Foreigner’s Michael Bluestein and Bruce Watson, though, I knew I had to be there for nothing else than the music. Growing up in the 70s, Foreigner was a part of my high school soundtrack. I can’t imagine anyone my age who doesn’t have memories associated with songs like, “Feels like the first time,” and “Cold as ice.” Sure, I’d bring the camera, but pictures would be secondary.
Fortunately, the duo was set up in an area that received plenty of sunlight and the weather was cooperative in making sure there was plenty of that light to go around. There were no limitations beyond general courtesy. I was able to shoot through all five songs in their limited set, and this happened:
To answer the most common questions: No, neither are original members. Michael joined the band on keyboard in 2008 and Bruce joined on guitar in 2011. Yes, they’re both incredibly personable and easy to talk with. They hung out for nearly two hours after taking selfies and signing autographs.
HUGE thanks to the folks at Metazoa Brewing for hosting this event and providing an incredible opportunity. And thanks to Michael and Bruce for making live music worth taking pictures again.
