All The News That Fits
February is crazy around here as I’m totally consumed covering fashion weeks for PATTERN. There are days where Kat and I do little more than pass each other on the way in or out the door. Life can get a bit hectic.
Historically, February is also the month when Kat does her first hair color change for the year. Typically, this is the brightest and boldest color of the year so I try and make sure we get some pictures. That means finding at least a 30-minute window where we’re both conscious and capable of making creative decisions.
We finally found an open spot that worked as long as I didn’t expect Kat to do anything wild and crazy with her makeup or wardrobe. I told her that was fine (I can always “fix” it in post, right?) and set up the lights only to have one promptly burn out. I love a good challenge but being down a light isn’t what I consider good. I improvised, of course, because that’s what we do.
I didn’t immediately tell Kat what my concept was while we were shooting. I kept bringing her things to hold and she’d pose and move on. When we got to the cheese, though, she began to “get suspicious.” That’s a nice way of saying she questioned my sanity. Still, she played along because she’s a good sport and doesn’t like hearing me whine when I don’t get my way.
The concept comes from having observed some rather hilarious errors in news crawlers over the past couple of months. The poor folks responsible for those things have our sympathy/ They work hard and get zero praise for their efforts.
Our crawlers aren’t exactly mistakes. Rather, we tried to think of what possible headlines could go with each picture. We didn’t want to be serious at all because the real world already is serious enough. Poking fun and being a bit absurd sounded like the better move. After all, Kat’s hair is a blend of shades from pink to deep magenta. That’s not exactly a look one associates with crime and mayhem.
These are fun. We took several liberties in creating the crawlers and didn’t worry too terribly much about precision. What matters more is, hey, do you like Kat’s hair?
Too bad, she’s already changed the color again.
You, too, can be part of the hair color craziness. Contact Kat at Biz on Fletcher for an appointment. She’s pretty busy these days but she’ll get you in eventually and who knows what color her own hair might be by the time you see her.
The rest is routine. Click. View. Share. Enjoy.
